Becoming Lady Lockwood by Jennifer Moore
Purchased: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Deseret Book
Amelia Beckett is delighted to be a widow. Married by proxy to a man she'd never met, Amelia recognizes that a fortuitous entry into widowhood frees her from meddlesome chaperones and matchmakers. Heiress to her mother's sugar plantation in Jamaica, she happily anticipates working in a man's world, with the additional credibility of her new title: Lady Lockwood. But with the arrival of Captain Sir William Drake, her plans quickly go awry . . . William has traversed the Atlantic with one purpose. If he cannot prove that Amelia's marriage to his brother was a fraud, she will be entitled to a sizeable portion of his family's estate. He is determined to return this duplicitous Lady to London for an official hearing, and he carries with him a letter that will ensure her cooperation . . . Left with no choice, Amelia joins the captain on his return voyage to England, and the two quickly find that ship life does not allow for evasion. Amelia and William are ceaselessly thrown together, and amidst fierce storms and ocean battles, what began as antipathy seems to be evolving quite unexpectedly. But as they draw ever closer to their destination, will the impossibility of their circumstances shatter any hope of a future together?
I’ve read few ocean trips novel, you know, those when the girl have to travel in a ship and the captain is not other but the protagonist. Or those when the girl is abducted by a pirate and traveled to a Caribbean Island or some dangerous waters. And I have to say that I LOVE them all. So I knew this was going to be a delicious book to devour with pleasure. And I didn’t go wrong.
As I said, I’ve read books like this one but there’s always something remarkable and different to point out. So, saying so, I like the plot very much. This is a very cute story about a girl who wants to be free of social convention, so when she was forced to marry and suddenly became a widow, she’s more than happy with her new life. But not her brother-in-law; he thinks that she made a complot with her father to gain the family heritage through the illegal marriage she bargain, so he would do everything to prove and dissolve it. However, when they both meet, things change, and even when they were not happy with each other at first, there’s no denying of the sparks flying among them.
I like very much how Miss Moore write, she made that every pages become a beautiful retelling of the place and characters. It hooked me from the first page and was so difficult to put it down; I just did it cause I needed to go to university, if wasn’t for that, I happily would had stay awake all night to finish it right away.
I love the characters very much, especially Amelia, she was so lovely that wasn’t difficult to fall for her. The things I like the most is that she wanted to be independent, that she stand her points and try very hard that no men think of her like trash or as a little thing because she is a woman. And also that she is willing to help everyone, she’s a worker girl and feeling useful isn’t her. So she was the most remarkable character into the story; Sure, William was great character and I like him very much, but Amelia was my favorite since the begging.
The romance was cute and amusing. This is romantic novel, and when rarely things gone wrong and the characters didn’t get together, or if they do have their happily ever after, the journey is what’s matter. So I love very much how this love rise between them. They kind of hate each other, he because thinks she deceived his brother into marriage, and she because he’s a annoying man who perfectly could be as mean as her father (or so she think). But through the ocean trip, the mix of everything they have to face, how she helps him in the most horrible situation and the undeniable sparks between the two of them, drowned them into love! So is was wonderful how it develop and was real and never rush.
Overall this was an entertaining read. Wonderful characters, beautiful setting of the story, amazingly written and such beautiful love story. You totally should read it!
I give it 5 hearts!
He finally stopped and pulled his chair closer to her, raising her chin. “Amelia. I cannot begin to thank you for what you did. It was brave and brilliant, and it terrifies me to think that you put your life at risk for—”
“For my shipmates, Captain.” She kept her eyes lowered.
“I would never have forgiven myself if anything had happened to you.” He wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumb.
“I would never have forgiven myself if I had not tried. These men, this ship, it has become . . . I care for them, William, for all of you.”
He raised her chin even higher, so that she was forced to lift her gaze his face. He stared at her for a moment. Then his eyes dropped to her lips, and Amelia’s pulse began to race. Would he kiss her again? They sat, frozen for a heartbeat, and then William stood, stealing with him all of the warmth in the room.
